The Navagragha Temples of Tamil Nadu, Shukra

Shukra or Venus is one of the nearest planets to earth.



Venus is the Roman name and Aphrodite the Greek name.She is the Goddess of love and beauty. Venus has been known since prehistoric times probably because is the brightest planet in the sky, other than the sun and the moon.

In Hindu mythology, Shukra is male, the son of the sage Bhrigu and the grandson of Brahma.

Shukra is to be always of a happy nature, fair complexioned and blind in one eye. He is the rainmaker, highly intelligent and well versed in legal matters.

Kanchanur

This Shiva Temple is associated with Sukran or Venus. Here, Shiva is known as Agnishwara and his consort Karpagambikai or Uma. It is a big and beautiful temple. The temple was built well before the seventh century,

The bronze idol of Shukra is housed in the outer praharam wall where pooja is offered regularly.

Agni worshipped Shiva here, and hence this manifestation of Shiva is known as Agnishwara.

The belief is that Shukra and Shiva are one and the same at Kachanur. Hence, appealing directly to Shiva is said to solve any problems because of the adverse position of Shukra on the horoscope. It is to Shukra that the unmarried or the childless appeal to, for removal of  hurdles in their lives. Shukra is the Graha in charge of conjugal harmony. Praying at the shrine can remove misunderstandings between husband and wife. Shukra bestows wealth and good fortune on his devotees. Men visit to pray for the well being of their wives. The devotee who prays hers is said to get cured of bronchial ailments or persistent fevers,

It is located in a quiet hamlet of Thiruvaavaduturai, about 12 km from Kumbalonam. Brahma is said to have had a vision here of Shiva´s wedding with Parvati.
